The 3D Computer Character Animation Online Diploma Program welcomes aspiring Animators and prepares them for entry level positions in the Animation, Visual Effects and Video Game industries.

Program Description

The objectives for this Online Program are to welcome aspiring animators and prepare them for entry level positions in the Animation, Visual Effects and Video Game industries.  This program provides them with the necessary foundation tools for them to become successful professionals in the Animation industry. Through a series of assignments, students will learn to bring to life three dimensional digital characters to achieve sincere believable performances. This is an online 3D Character Animation Course.



This program is accredited by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB), designated under the British Columbia Education Quality Assurance (BCEQA), the Ministry of Advanced Education and listed under the Canadian Information Center for International Credentials (CICIC).


What does accreditation mean?

Accreditation is meant to protect students, schools, and employers. It ensures that a school is educating its students and meeting quality standards.   If you choose a school that isn’t accredited, it may be difficult to use your academic credentials.  Few employers will take your education seriously. Additionally, you may not be able to transfer your credit hours or degree to an accredited school.

If you are learning for personal enjoyment, accreditation may not be important to you. However, if you want to use your academic credential in the workplace or plan on furthering your education at a later date, accreditation is essential.


Program Duration

3D Character Animation at Vancouver Animation School is a 4 term intensive. The  Program consists of 10 hours per week comprised of live classes and online activities with a total duration of 990 hours delivered in 24 months.  A full time version is also available.


Who should attend this program?

Aspiring animators, people that demonstrate problem solving skills, people that like to create, entertain and have a wild imagination.  Artists with the ability to convey their thoughts through computer animation software.

Who is not our target student?

Artists looking for general education, undecided or unknowledgeable about career paths.  We recommend taking our other short introductory courses we offer to find and recognize your strengths.


Class Times, Assignments and Workload

- Classes are delivered 100% online
- Small class sizes:  8 students
- 1 live session per week, 1 hour per session (Watch sample class)
- Bi-weekly assignments comprised of milestones and deadlines
- Online activities
- Assignments workload 10 - 12 hours per week
- Schedules are assembled by time zone; applicants will provide 3 time preferences in the application form.  We do our best to match those preferences between students and teachers.
- This program is not available for students on a study visa.

Software Requirements

Autodesk® Maya® 2011 is a modeling, animation, rendering, and visual effects software offering film, game, television and design visualization artists an end-to-end creative workflow.

An additional video editing software is needed, students are able to use their preferred video editing software.


Additional Information

Students must complete every assignment in the program and obtain a minimum average of letter B- (73%) per term in order to graduate.

Graduates will be able to work in different industries such as: Film, Video Games, TV, Web, Mobile. Working as an Animator, Jr. Animator, Assistant Animator.


University Degrees

This program is eligible for University Degree Pathways.


Transfer Credits

This program is listed under the BC Transfer Guide as block transfer.
