Can you tell us a bit of your art background prior to VANAS?
I was a mostly self-taught artist, with one year of illustration training at a local community college.
What were your motivations to take the program?
My intentions were two-fold: I wanted to get the training to be able to start a career in concept art, and I simply wanted to learn to paint and create art in Photoshop.
How has VANAS helped you?
I have gained more confidence in my desire to do concept art for a living. My abilities in working with Photoshop are far above what they were before, and I feel that my work as an artist in general has improved. I hope that I now have a more critical eye toward my own work.
Can you mention some A-ha! moments during your education?
A lot of them were little things that were told to me during critiques and demos, that I plan to put into practice in my work.
How do you compare your art skills before and after VANAS?
My art skills have significantly improved, especially the tools and techniques I now have at my disposal.
What was your favorite class and teacher? (why?)
I really enjoyed the classes in which we actually created concepts. While all of my teachers were really helpful, Todd Marshall's enthusiasm was really encouraging. He always showed excitement both for art itself and for us, his students. He helped me to be even more enthusiastic about my work.
Is there anything you would like to add?
Keep up the good work, VANAS!
