Can you tell us a bit of your art background prior to VANAS?
I spent many years studying science and psychology before discovering my passion for art and design. I studied Industrial Design and worked for several years designing a variety of consumer products before turning my attention to Concept Art. I was fortunate enough to work as a Concept Artist on a video game project when I was working as a freelance designer. When that project came to an end, I looked for opportunities to expand my skills and abilities and it was through that search that I was introduced to VANAS.
What were your motivations to take the program?
I wanted a program that would enable me to build on my existing foundation and help me push my artistic skills and abilities. VANAS offered me the opportunity to do that through challenging assignments and professional feedback. I also wanted a program that would help me develop a strong and complete portfolio when I graduated.
How has VANAS helped you?
The most significant thing I have gained through this program is the confidence to take on a broad range of subjects as an artist. Before VANAS, my experience was fairly limited when it came to the things Concept Artists must be proficient in. I now feel much better equipped to take on a large variety of challenges.

Can you mention some A-ha! moments during your education?
One of the key ones for me was developing a strategy for adding color to my work. Color was a subject that often confused and intimidated me. I still have much to learn but I now have the confidence to tackle color in a way I did not before.

How do you compare your art skills before and after VANAS?
I feel much more capable in all areas as an artist. Before VANAS, I mostly worked with line and basic rendering techniques. This program has enabled me to explore many other approaches to the creative process and has given me a much broader foundation to build on in the future.
What was your favourite class and teacher?
|"You really feel like you are part of a family"|
I have always loved vehicle and prop design so being able to explore these topics was particularly exciting for me. It was a great opportunity to explore these subjects using new approaches I was not aware of before.
Is there anything you would like to add?
I really enjoyed my time at VANAS. The staff are always available to help students and you really feel like you are part of a family. Students have the opportunity to learn a lot in a relatively short period and the system is very effective in helping you develop your skills.
